Safeguarding the Rights of Allied Health Workers

The HSU or Health Services Union is a specialist Health Union working for the welfare of health care workers. Australian health care system would not be this great or function as seamlessly as it does without the efforts of health care workers and aged care staff. The Health Services Union strives at securing the rights of these health professionals who work hard to make our lives better.

 So whether you are specialist surgeon, nurse, allied health worker or you work for the aged care, disabilities or ambulance paramedics you can become an HSU Member. This is not all. The HSU also covers workers in cleaning, maintenance, medical records, operating theatres, dietetics, radiography and nuclear medicine.

As part of the bereavement benefit, family of the deceased HSU member receives $10,000 that can be used for any urgent expenses.

The Journey Insurance is about offering HSU members protection in case of accidents on the way to or from work. In case a member suffers loss of income on the way back to or from work, he is offered 85% of weekly wages to a maximum of $1500 per week. The HSU offers several payments based on the type of injury sustained.

HSU members can avail free initial legal advice on matters that do not concern employment. Members are also offered discounts on family law and other private legal matters.

The HSU has been involved in various campaigns to secure the rights of health care workers.

All we matter campaign:

This campaign aims to let people know how health workers form the backbone of the overall health care system and how the entire system would collapse without their constant hard work. As part of the campaign, HSU members let their communities know the often unseen and unheard stories. They narrate incidents that showcase why and how much their work matters and the impact it has on the lives of community members.

$1000 No way campaign:

This campaign was launched to address parking fees issues in public hospitals. The HSU has been fighting for health workers who need to shell out more than $1000 a year for a parking slot and even this payment does not guarantee them a fixed spot.

Ambulance Paramedics campaign

The Health Services Union has been striving hard to boost ambulance staffing. Underfunding on the part of the NSW government has affected the capacity of paramedic numbers and there has been practically no increase in ambulance paramedics in the last one decade.
