HSU or the Health Services Union is a group that works towards safeguarding the rights of health workers.  Australia is proud to have a top class health care system and this is owing to the hard work of health professionals and allied health workers.

Who all can become a member of HSU?

Anyone who works in NSW for public health, private health, ambulance service, disability or aged care service can become a member of HSU.

The health services union NSW has a wide area of coverage when it comes to health workers. It covers workers in cleaning, food services, clerical services, administration, laboratories, medical records, nuclear medicine & radiography, pharmacy, dietetics, finance, IT and more. Most staff in disabilities and aged care is covered except registered nurses.

What all benefits do the members enjoy?

As a member of the health services union or HSU, you enjoy several benefits. These include:
  • Journey Insurance
The journey insurance was removed by the NSW liberal government in 2012. The health services union has strived and given it back to its members at no additional cost. The insurance covers health workers in case they suffer a loss of income due to any injury or accident on the way to or from work.
Under this, the members get up to 85 % of their weekly wage or a maximum of $1500 every week.  There is a scale of payment for specific injuries.
  • $1000 Bereavement Benefit
HSU offers immediate help to the family in case of death of a member. The next of the kin is provided a monetary support of $10,000. Members after 24 months of joining are covered for all causes of death including per-existing illness.
  • Free Legal Services
If you are a member of the Health services union, you are entitled to free general legal advice on matters outside of your employment. Get discounts on legal services as family law and private legal disputes.
When you are buying or selling property, it is advisable to take legal advice. Advice on such conveyancing matters is offered at much reduced fee to all HSU Members.

HSU has been involved in various campaigns that are aimed at securing the rights of healthcare workers.

Some of these campaigns include:
  • Health Workers – We all matter Campaign
This campaign has been specially designed to highlight the importance of healthcare workers amongst citizens and how vital their contribution is towards giving Australia a high class health care system.
  • $1000 No way Campaign
This campaign was to protest against rising parking fees for health professionals. At Liverpool hospital, health workers paying more than $1000 every year for parking and not getting a guaranteed spot was unacceptable.
  • Know Bullying Campaign
HSU has also launched a new campaign to combat workplace bullying. The union wants to achieve this through awareness and education programs with the help of members and managers.
